Abby’s story – from hiding in the shadows to living in the open
Abby was sexually abused as a young girl and never told anyone about it. It made her feel dirty and as if there was something wrong with her. She wanted to share it with her loved ones for years but never did. She was scared of what they would say or think. Abby felt like she was playing a part that was expected of her and it was becoming harder and harder to keep up the pretence. Her doctor had diagnosed her with depression and placed her on a mental health plan.
Abby began seeing who the doctor recommended however she felt as if her childhood issues didn’t seem to be understood in a way she needed them to be. Right from the first conversation on the phone, Abby felt there was understanding about what she was talking about. This helped her feel at ease straightaway.
Abby found it very difficult to speak about what happened as she believed that somehow she allowed the abuse to happen. She believed it was her fault. Abby learned the opposite was true. She found she didn’t have to keep secrets from those she loved anymore. Abby could stop hiding her past. She found that it gave her a sense of freedom and relief she never thought possible.
Emma’s story – from victim to achiever
After changes in staff, Emma felt like she was being bullied day after day. Emma loved her job and where she worked, but it had changed. Emma found that she wasn’t able to get up in morning and face the day. She went from being carefree to jumpy and nervous most of the time. She just wasn’t herself anymore.
Emma felt that she was clearly understood, especially in terms of how she being affected by what was going on and what she wanted to achieve from counselling. Key areas of focus were communication skills, as well as dealing with upsetting and intense emotions. Emma found that she wasn’t as nervous anymore and getting up to go to work became easier. This was achieved within two sessions.
Emma had a performance review coming up which she was very nervous about as it was being conducted by the person she had been bullied by. A strategy was developed which allowed her to say what she wanted to in a professional and calm manner despite feeling fearful.
After the review, Emma was even given great feedback saying how well composed she was. Two months later, she still has good working relationships with the people she previously had difficulty with.
Victoria’s story – From being bound to feeling free
Victoria was deeply concerned about what other people thought of her. She would feel very guilty if she didn’t do what other people wanted her to. She felt she gave so much of herself until there was nothing left to give. She was becoming resentful and depressed as a result. She’d get very anxious and her blood pressure increased to a level that was concerning.
Within three sessions, Victoria was able to determine what her values are and what was important to her. This helped her to see that so long she was honouring her values and who she was, it was ok to say no. Now Victoria is able to say no and not feel guilty. Things that used to upset her don’t anymore. Victoria reported to feeling calm with a renewed sense of who I she is. The change was so apparent her husband commented on wanting to know who this new woman in his life was.
Ella’s story – from powerless to powerful
After six sessions of counselling, Ella had a recurring dream that she experienced throughout her life as an adult. It would wake her up in a pool of sweat, from which she was highly distressed and left in a frightened state. Time was spent going over the dream, helping Ella figure out what the symbolism meant to her, which enabled her to come to her own conclusion to what it meant. Ella interpreted her own dream which unlocked an area of her life she found difficult to come to terms with.
From what she had already learned about herself in therapy so far, combined with understanding her dream, she hadn’t realised how deeply affected she felt by an ongoing situation which left her feeling powerless. Ella found the confidence and the strength to even speak about this situation which she hadn’t fully realised the extent of which she been avoiding. Ella connected with a courage she wasn’t aware of that she possessed, allowing her to make decisions that altered how related with others. This was the breakthrough she hoped for but didn’t think possible.

She’s found a new place to live where she’s happy, her children are happy, and she’s become to believe again that there are still good people in the world.
Tammy and Mark’s story – from disconnected to connected
Tammy and Mark felt as if every discussion that had was an argument. Individually, they each felt frustrated, hurt and on edge. They hadn’t made love in a long time. The bond they had cherished was gone which caused a high degree of sadness. After three sessions, they found a way to connect again. While they’re not quite where they want to be, they felt hopeful for the first time in months. They remembered why they were in the relationship in the first place. They we able to say things they didn’t know were locked away inside and causing heartache. Their understanding of each other has deepened.
